What is a spam folder?

The spam folder is an email marketer’s worst nightmare. To avoid your emails ending up there, mastering the art of crafting better emails is essential.

Spam folders serve a valuable purpose by protecting our inboxes from unwanted junk mail. However, spam filters can sometimes misclassify legitimate emails, placing them in the spam folder without apparent reason.

When this occurs, it can be quite frustrating. As email marketers, it's our responsibility to ensure our campaigns are free from content that might be flagged as spam. Choosing the right words is crucial.

What does "spam trigger words" mean?

Spam trigger words are terms or phrases that email service providers (like Gmail, AOL, Yahoo or Outlook) identify as warning signs the email might be spammy. Most spam keywords fall into at least one of these five categories:

  • 🚨 Urgency - These words pressure recipients into acting fast, such as "Urgent", "Last Chance" or "Before it’s too late"
  • 🔞 Shady - Unethical or legally dubious terms
  • 🤩 Overpromise - Overly exaggerated claims (anything that sounds too good to be true) like "worlds strongest", "100% free" or "the best"
  • 💰 Money - This covers everything related to money or offers, such as "£££" or "Earn cash"
  • 💬 Unnatural - These are words that don't feel natural or that are difficult to understand, such as "Dear friend" or "work at home"
